27 Aug. 2004, the United States Federal Courts revoked the U.S. citizenship of an 84-year-old resident for his Nazi past, which he concealed upon arriving at the U.S. 50 years ago.
Inspired by a news event, playwright Chen Yu-lin had written Joseph Wittje in 2005, whose early draft was co-developed with the actors during read-through. With an element of "identity exchange", the play provides an answer to resolving the impasse of overly-rigid self-identification.During his return to Germany, Among the swift shifts and flows of scenes and characters, Wittje himself has not changed from the exchange of identity, yet it is evident how others, society and the media misinterpret and abuse the concepts of "identity" and "identification".
While maintaining the structure and spirits of the script, the production emphasizes the conflicts between the "true self" and the "self" within a disrupted society by focusing on the self and life experience of Joseph Wittje, simplifying the roles of other characters with the use of chorus.
